Portland is a well laid out city(some say over planned) in the Willamette Valley close to the beach and the mountains. Long a progressive city has lots of free internet hot spots in some cases covering several blocks. Has a great and large independent book store (Powell's)
Its location makes it good for many outdoor activities from hiking in the summer to skiing in the winter. The close by Columbia Gorge is a national senic area featuring nude sunbathing at Roster rock and top wind surfing.
In town there are exelent restrants, lots of local Micro Brewed beers, friendly People and several musiums. Also if you are into shoping Oregon is sales tax free making everything that much cheaper.
Getting around town is easy with cheap public parking, and Trimet the local mass transit system using buses. trollies and trains going even to the airport making getting there and away easy.
Portland has many great nieghborhoods. Hawthorn across the river from downtown is funky nieghborhood with shops restrants and the Bagdad Theater with dollar movies and beer.
The Pearl is hip with restrants clubs and art gallaries.
North West is an older nieghborhood with trendy shopping and great coffee shops.
