Tampa is a major United States city located in Hillsborough County, on the west coast of Florida. It serves as its county seat. The population within the city limits in 2004, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, was 321,772; making it the third largest city in the state, following Jacksonville and Miami.
Tampa is a part of the Tampa-[[St. Petersburg]]-Clearwater metropolitan area, most commonly referred to as the "Tampa Bay area". The four-county area is composed of roughly 2.6 million residents, making it the second largest Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in the state behind Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, the third largest in the Southeastern United States, and the twelfth largest in the United States.

Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center is the largest performing arts complex in the Southeast, presenting high quality performing arts programming from major Broadway tours to grand opera, dance, cabaret, comedy and concerts to the region. TBPAC is also home to the Patel Conservatory, which opened in 2004.
West Tampa is one of the oldest neighborhoods within the city limits of Tampa, USA and a former incorporated city, located just west of downtown Tampa. As of the 2000 census, the neighborhood had a population of 22,008. West Tampa has one of the highest concentration of latinos in the city since its founding in the early 1890's.
West Tampa was founded in 1892 by Cuban immigrants. It was incorporated as a city three years later (1895) with a population of 2,335, becoming the 2nd largest hispanic community in the state. Since its inception, the city was one of the fastest-growing cities in Florida. In 1900, it had more inhabitants than the city of Tallahassee and was the second largest city in Hillsborough County. It was one of the top cigar-making cities in the country during the early 20th century along with Ybor City. West Tampa, however, was absorbed by the city of Tampa in 1925 and became a city neighborhood.
Ybor City (pronounced "ee-bore") is an unincorporated district located in Hillsborough County, Florida near downtown Tampa. The district's many nightclubs and bars makes it a popular evening and weekend hotspot in the Tampa Bay area.
It is one of three National Historic Landmark Districts in Florida.
Horse Racing at Tampa Bay Downs, in Oldsmar, first opened in 1926. The Tampa Bay Downs live racing season is from December to May with simulcasting year round. They also have a card room offering poker games.
Greyhound racing is the sport of racing greyhounds. The dogs chase a lure (an artificial hare or rabbit) on a track until they arrive at the finish line. The one that arrives first is the winner.
The Tampa Theatre is a historic movie palace and city landmark located in downtown Tampa, Florida. It is Tampa's only non-profit theatre and operating costs are largely covered by its membership program as well as various corporate sponsors.
The University of South Florida (USF) is a public university located in Tampa, Florida, USA, with branch campuses in St. Petersburg, Sarasota and Lakeland. The main campus is located in North Tampa, near the city of Temple Terrace. Bordered on the south by Fowler Avenue and on the north by Fletcher Avenue, the university is in close proximity to the Museum of Science and Industry as well as Busch Gardens and the University Mall shopping center.
The university is the third largest in the state of Florida, with a Fall 2005 enrollment of 43,021. [1] USF is currently ranked ninth in the country in terms of enrolled students.
USF is also one of three public universities in the state (after the University of Florida and Florida State University) to have received first-tier research university status by the Carnegie Foundation, a mission first started by former university president Betty Castor in the 1990s. As such, USF takes great pride to advertise its position as a research university in promotional advertisements and brochures.
USF's mascot is the Bull and its colors are green and gold. The university's sports teams participate at the NCAA Division I-A level. In 2005, USF joined the Big East Conference. USF previously belonged to Conference USA, the Metro Conference, and the Sun Belt Conference.
USF is currently the national headquarters for Phi Alpha Theta, a history honor society. The university's current president is Judy Genshaft.
