St. Vincent, chief island of the chain, is 18 mi (29 km) long and 11 mi (18 km) wide, and is located 100 mi (161 km) west of Barbados. The island is mountainous and well forested. St. Vincent is dominated by the volcano Mount Soufriere, which rises to 4,048 ft (1,234 m). The Grenadines, a chain of nearly 600 islets with a total area of only 17 sq mi (27 sq km), extend for 60 mi (96 km) between St. Vincent and Grenada.

Just a mile or so from E.T. Joshua Airport is the bright and bustling capital - Kingstown. Every week, huge cargo ships dock at the jetty to load the islands' main export - bananas - for the long journey to Europe.

Kingstown market - a real Caribbean market - where you can choose from many varieties of fruits and vegetables: mangos, oranges, lemons, tangerines, pineapples, bananas, breadfruit and more are on offer.

The Kingstown fish market - recently built - will also excite you with its range of kingfish, snapper and grouper.

In the northern part of town, visit the historic Botanic Gardens - the oldest in the Americas. Here you will find offspring of Captain Bligh's original breadfruit tree, alongside a species of plant and parrot unique to St. Vincent.

Just outside Kingstown, at over 600 feet, is Fort Charlotte, completed by the British in 1806 during their struggle with the French and the Caribs for control of the island. Original canons still wait for action on the battlement and the barracks have been converted into a pictorial museum illustrating the island's colourful history. It is easy to transport yourself back to the last century and to appreciate then location of the Fort, with a commanding view over the sea and the whole south of St. Vincent.

A coastguard lookout post puts this view to good use to this day. On a clear day, you can see as far as Grenada, some 60 miles to the south. Looking north, enjoy the views of the west coast and Mount St. Andrews, the southernmost of the peaks, which form the backbone of St. Vincent. The duty watchman will be pleased to let you use his powerful binoculars to view far off yachts.

St. Vincent is divided into two distinct coastal structures Windward (east) and Leeward (west). The Leeward (west) is endowed with a series of spectacular slopes and valleys running down into tranquil waters and beaches such as Ottley Hall, Mount Wynne and Kearton's Bay. One of the valleys, Buccament, also boasts a casino and a nature trail. The trail is ideal for picnics and for a sight of the elusive St. Vincent parrot. The drive up the meandering Leeward highway takes you through the villages of Layou and Barrouallie to Chateaubelair and Richmond, where the road ends with the sea on your left and mountains with the Soufriere Volcano in sight.

At the northwestern tip of the island are the breathtaking Falls of Baleine, only accessible by boat but an experience not to be missed. Fresh mountain water plunges 60 feet into a natural pool, before running down towards the sea. Standing beneath the Falls is pure exhilaration. A long way to go for a shower but well worth it. The Windward coast is equally rewarding but very different from the Leeward side. Here you will be immediately aware of the contrast by the roaring sounds of the Atlantic waves, which rush unceasingly onto rugged cliffs and beaches formed by volcanic lava. Amidst all of this is the refreshing smell of the sea brought in by the trade winds, which constantly fan the shoreline.

The Windward Highway heads northwards along the coast, through some of St. Vincent's most fertile agricultural lands, to Georgetown, once the centre for sugar production and still the source of Vincentian rum. North of Georgetown, a four-wheel drive vehicle is advisable for crossing Rabacca Dry River onto the Orange Hill Estate. Once a major coconut plantation of over 3,000 acres, it is now being resettled by small farmers under a government rural project.

Once across the Dry River, you can continue north to Sandy Bay, Owia and Fancy, the northernmost settlement in St. Vincent. Stop off at the Owia Salt Ponds, a popular site with a good view of St. Lucia 20 miles to the northwest.

Heading inland from the Dry River is a trail climbing through the rain forest to the crater of La Soufriere, St. Vincent's volcano. It is an arduous hike, best started early in the morning, but the view into the crater is ample reward.

The main islands in the Grenadines are Bequia, Balliceau, Canouan, Mayreau, Mustique, Isle D'Quatre, Petit Saint Vincent, and Union Island.

Bequia
Lying just nine miles to the south of St. Vincent, Bequia is the largest of the Grenadine islands - a compact seven square miles. Her history has been deeply entwined with the sea for generations. The age-old traditions of boat-building, fishing and whaling are still evident.

Young Island
Young Island is only 600' from St. Vincent and its 35 acres hold 30 stone cottages surrounded by tropical lushness. The resort has a delightful upscale "castaway" atmosphere yet is near enough St. Vincent to offer many day trip opportunities - rain forest and volcano hiking, tours of the valleys, plantations, and historic sites.

Mustique
The island, 3 miles long and 1,5 miles wide at its widest point, is hilly, with a large plain in the north and is essentially composed of seven valleys each with a white sand beach and wooded hills that rise to a height of 495 feet.

Canouan
Set in the middle of the Grenadine archipelago, Canouan is an island of only 5 square miles.

Canouan is a crescent-shaped island with some of the best, most private beaches in the Caribbean. Still largely untouched by man, Canouan is a superb place to get away from it all and unwind. For the more energetic, the clear blue waters are ideal for a variety of watersports, or you can walk to the abandoned village in the north of the island, destroyed by a hurricane in 1921, and see its marvelous church.

The beaches at Glossy Bay and on the stunning windward coats are the stuff which dreams are made of. To reach the windward beaches you must cross the narrow spine of hills that form the backbone of Canouan, before emerging in paradise.

South of Canouan is the island of Mayreau and the celebrated Tobago Cays, reputed to be unsurpassed for sailing and snorkeling. In these waters, you will be astounded by the infinite variety of brightly coloured tropical fish and coral, all protected from the ravages of the sea by the impressive World's End Reef.

Mayreau
Mayreau lies west of the Tobago Cays. It is the smallest (1 1/2 square miles) of the inhabited Grenadine islands, with a population of two hundred and fifty-four people. Mayreau is accessible only by boat. The island is rimmed by magnificent sweeping white sandy beaches perfect for sailing and snorkeling.

Hike along the trail from Salt Whistle Bay up to the quaint little village, with friendly bars, local restaurants, and a lovely Catholic church which offers a panoramic view of the Tobago Cays. From Saline Bay a road also leads to the village or across the southern part of the island to the salt pond where you can collect rock salt in the dry season, or continue on to explore the pristine beaches.

Tobago Cays
The huge Horseshoe Reef that protects these five deserted islets, with their dazzling, palm-studded shorelines, provides some of the best snorkelling and diving in the world. The brilliant powdery, white sand, the coloured waters shaded in unimaginable blues and the neon marine life beneath give true meaning to the "stop-the-world-l-want-to-get-off' Caribbean fantasy.

The Cays have been declared a wildlife reserve by the government and all visitors are urged to preserve and protect this unique natural resource. No fishing, jet skis, or anchoring of dinghies allowed. Make your own contribution to the efforts by disposing properly of your debris, including the charcoal and remainders of your beach barbecue. Local youths may offer to remove your garbage for a fee but avoid this temptation, as some are known to dump it without care.

Palm Island
This tiny resort island is just a mile from Union Island, where you are met by the resort's private boat and transported to this 135-acre tropical oasis of unhurried rest and stress free relaxation. Originally known as Prune Island, Palm got its current name when former owners, the late John Caldwell (a.k.a Johnny Coconuts) and his wife Mary, planted hundreds of coconut palms, transforming the deserted island into a palm covered resort. Now a private all-inclusive resort where tranquility reigns, Palm Island is the perfect getaway for people who love natural beauty and want to escape from it all. Surrounded by crystal clear waters and five sparkling white beaches, one of the favourites being Casuarina Beach, which runs the entire length of the western coastline.

Petit St. Vincent
Petit St. Vincent, or PSV, as it is often called, is one of the world's most enchanting hideaways. Over its varied terrain (113-acres) twenty-two private cottages are scattered some on hillsides, some set into the sides of cliffs, some right on the beach - all absolutely heavenly. For most people the appeal of PSV is what it "does not have"- no telephones or television, no air-conditioning, no casinos or cabarets. Not even room keys.

When you want nothing so much as to be alone, you simply send up the red flag on the bamboo pole outside your cottage and you are instantly furnished with that most valuable of commodities exclusive privacy. On the other hand, hoist a yellow flag and the staff are at your service, whether it's a picnic lunch served on the beach, or a night cap in your villa.

There is plenty to keep the active people busy, and hammocks have been strategically placed all along the beaches for those who just want to unwind and relax. In the interest of guests' sought after privacy, access by non-guests is limited to the main building which houses the bar, restaurant and boutique. Dinner is by reservation only.

Union Island
Union Island is located midway between Grenada and St. Vincent and is equidistant from Barbados, Trinidad and Martinique.

The Southern Grenadines
On maps of the southern Grenadines, you will be intrigued by the shifting sandbanks known as Punaise and Mopion . Punaise is often submerged but not so Mopion, the sort of desert island paradise you thought existed only in your dreams. Perched atop a coral reef, its pure white sands extend all around, forming an ideal location for snorkeling. An infinite variety of tropical fish and coral thrive here and the hours just slide by as you soak up the sun and take in the atmosphere.

The southernmost point in St. Vincent and the Grenadines is the exclusive resort island of Petit St. Vincent (PSV). Privacy is the natural way of things here - the tiny island is surrounded by beach and you will almost always have a stretch entirely to yourself.

Culture

St Vincent & the Grenadines share traditional West Indian culture, giving it a multi-ethnic twist of African, Black Carib, French and British influences. Musically, islanders go for reggae, calypso and steel bands. Sports-wise they prefer British forms like cricket and soccer. Some of the Grenadine islands, Bequia in particular, have long been reliant upon the sea for a living; boat building, both full-scale and models, is an island art form. The local patois is a mix of French, Spanish and various African languages.

St Vincent has rich volcanic soil and produces most of the fruits and vegetables sold throughout the Grenadines. Seafood is abundant, with conch, fish, shrimp, whelk and lobster appearing on most menus. Common West Indian foods include callaloo soup, pumpkin soup, rotis, saltfish and various breadfruit preparations, including the national dish, which is breadfruit and fried jackfish. Try the sweet and juicy St Vincent orange, which is ripe while still green, or the locally distilled Captain Bligh Rum.

St Vincent's carnival, called Vincy Mas, is the main cultural event of the year. Usually held during the first two weeks of July, it features a 12-day run of calypso and steel band music, colourful costume parades and lots of dancing. Most of the action is centred in Kingstown. On Bequia, there's a major regatta over the Easter weekend. A Christmas celebration called Nine Mornings starts on 15 December and features parades through the streets of Kingstown, bicycle races, string band serenades and carolling. May Day is also Fisherman's Day on St Vincent, which comes at the end of a week's worth of contests when the island's fishermen catch as many fish and mend as many nets as they can.
