This certainly does not mean Korea has lost touch with its roots. Like Japan it manages to combine the ultra modern with the very traditional.
The capital city of Seoul is a good example of this. It a big dynamic city, but keeps the traditions of the ancestors alive. Old temples are still well visited, and the many palaces of former rulers remind the visitor of the past.
Pusan in the south is a big harbor place. It is a nice city and offers good possibilities for excursions, especially Manono island and apolima island is a very popular place to go for a short trip.
Places of Interest:

The fifth largest city in the world, the Seoul metropolis has a population of about 11 million and is the center for economy, finance, the arts and culture. Seoul is known to be one of the safest places to travel in with its low crime rate. There is a blend of old and new in Seoul with the modern high-rises and trendy shops mixed in with ancient temples and palaces. Shopping is not a problem with the many department stores and street shops located around the city. People are very sociable and kind to visitors in Seoul. You will always see people in groups laughing and walking along the streets. Although English is taught in school, most Koreans have problems with pronunciation. Since they can read English very well, it's a good idea to write down questions. The public transportation in Seoul is excellent and will take you to almost any place you need to go whether it's by taxi, bus, or subway. Traffic congestion is a big problem in Seoul, so the quickest way of getting around Seoul is generally by subway. The Han River flows through the center of Seoul. Encircling the city are rocky mountains which makes Seoul blend nature and modernization beautifully. The center of Seoul has a mountain called Namsan, which has a tower on top that enables one to see almost all of the city on a clear day. Temperatures in Seoul are clearly defined by the four seasons: spring, summer, fall and winter. Autumn is the best time to visit Seoul since the temperatures are mild and the sky is clear. Seoul has four palaces from the Chosun Dynasty. The Chosun Dynasty determined that Seoul was to be the capital of the Korean Peninsula in 1394. It remained the capital of the entire peninsula throughout the Chosun Dynasty up to the Korean War. During the Korean War, Seoul was almost totally destroyed. From 1960-1970, there was a tremendous effort to rebuild the city. Rapid economic growth was evident and by 1988, Seoul was home to the Olympics which brought to the world's attention that it was one of the major cities in Asia.

Pusan is the second-largest city in South Korea. It is a big industrial port with almost 4 million inhabitants. It is not a very attractive city, but there are a few nice beaches nearby. More importantly : Pusan is also the departure point for Cheju island.
Take in the view from Pusan Tower in Yongdusan Park and visit the Yi Sun-shin statue, the fish market (best seen 6-7 am) the U.N. Cemetery (where fallen U.N. soldiers from the Korean War are buried) and the Municipal Museum.
Daytrips include Haeundae which has casinos and a spa); Kumgang Park (beautiful cherry blossoms in the spring); and Pomosa , a 7th-century temple area.
Pusan is 340 km southeast of Seoul.

Suwon has a rich history since it was founded during the Joseon Dynasty in the 18th century as a fortress city. It's city walls are a world heritage site and it offers a look back at South Korea's past. It's home to Hwaseong Fortress, Woncheon Amusement Park, Everland Amusement Park, The Korean Traditional Folk Village, and various temples and tombs.
But Suwon is also tuned in to the future - it is recognised as South Korea's leading city in digital technology.
Cheju island
If you are in Korea for your honeymoon, Cheju is where you should be heading for. Cheju island (Chejudo) known as a place of fantasy or mystery is the largest island in Korea and is located in the southwest sea of the Korean peninsula and is highlighted for its uniqueness. This large island 60 mi/100 km off the coast of the mainland has a unique history dress architecture language and tradition. Millions of dollars have been pumped into the island to build deluxe hotels and modernize the island’s infrastructure. Nevertheless the island has not lost its charm. Chenju seems a world away from the mainland even though it’s relatively easy to reach—it’s an hour’s flight south of Seoul or an overnight ferry ride from Pusan, Mokpo or Wando. The island itself has a good traffic infrastructure thanks to the many roads. The population of the island is about 535,000. A major highlight is Halla mountain, which was a volcano once rising 1,950 metres above the sea level.

The South Koreans have turned their hand to just about any art form you can name. Traditional music is similar to that of Japan and China, with an emphasis on strings. The two main forms are the stately chongak and the folksier minsogak. Seoul is not just a city but also a showpiece of modern and traditional architecture; don't miss the city gates and the Chosun-era Gyeongbokgung Palace.
South Korea is also strong in the visual arts. Traditional painting has strong Chinese and calligraphic elements, with the brush line being the most important feature. Most traditional sculpture is Buddhist, and includes statues and pagodas - one of the best Buddhas is at Seokguram. Shamanists do a great line in woodcarving. Seoul has several art sculpture parks, where modern sculptors show their works. Seoul is also a showpiece of modern and traditional architecture, including the city gates and the Chosun-era Gyeongbokgung Palace.

Traditional music is similar to that of Japan and China, with an emphasis on strings. The two main forms are the stately chongak and the folksier minsogak. Among the folk dances are drum dances (mugo - a hectic, lively court dance where the participants wear drums around their necks), mask dances (talchum), monk dances (seungmu) and spirit-cleansing dances (salpuri).
