Trango Towers, Baltoro Glacier, Karakoram, Pakistan
Pakistan is located in Southern Asia, bordering the Arabian Sea, between India on the east and Iran and Afghanistan on the west and China in the north.

Pakistan is an almost undiscovered touristic treasure. This does not mean you can explore it on your own. There will be many Pakistani's watching over your shoulder to share the experience, for Pakistan has one of the fastest growing population in the world.

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan extends along either side of the historic Indus River, following its course from the mountain valleys of the Himalayas down to the Arabian Sea. Bordering on India, China, Afghanistan and Iran, it is strategically located astride the ancient trade routes between Asia and Europe.

Nameless Tower, Pakistan
Pakistan has a lot to offer to the exploring traveler. In the south you'll find beautiful beaches, lagoons and mangrove forests. The high uprising peaks of the Himalayan, the Karakorams and the Hindu Kush mountain ranges dominate the north, with the K2 (8611 m.) as a final challenge to alpinists. Without doubt this is one of the most beautiful mountain regions in the world. The Karakoram Highway which runs over the over the Khunjerab pass and leads from Islamabad via Gilgit , Hunza valley and Passu to Kashgar in China is an unforgetable way to see this region. The nearby Valleys of Chitral , Swat and Skardu are extremely beautiful as well. Landscapes in the north range from Swiss style mountain scenery to what you can expect to see on the moon.

Between the mountains in the North and the sandy beaches in the South, there are all sorts of landscapes from harsh deserts and green valleys to fertile plains and desolate plateaus.

But it's not just natures wonders to be see here. Though Pakistan as a country is relatively new, it's really the birthplace of mankind. Fossils of Homo sapiens found in the area date back 50,000 years. Pakistan has ruins of the most ancient civilization of the planet and has cities that have been full of life for centuries now, and have the monuments to show for it. Most interesting city of all is the capital Islamabad , but Peshawar or Quetta are also well worth your visit, and then there's the city of contrasts Karachi , also called the city of lights or Lahore , the city best known for its beautiful gardens, were the national flower, Jasmine, grows abundantly that should not be missed either.Multan is one of the oldest civilizations of the world. This city records the history since 2000 years B.C. Multan is a city in south central Punjab province. It is built just east of the Chenab River. About 966 km from Karachi and more or less right in the center of the country lie the ancient city of Multan. Famous Obejcts:

Islamabad
Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, is located against the backdrop of Margalla Hills at the northern edge of Potohar Plateau. In contrast to its twin city Rawalpindi, it is lush green, spacious and peaceful. Most travelers will prefer the hustle and bustle of Pindi, but Islamabad has all the embassies and some other very useful institutions for travelers, so it is quite likely you will at least be coming over from Pindi a few times.

Furthermore, Islamabad has couple of good museums which are worthwhile to visit while you are waiting for your Chinese visa. Head for Garden Avenue to see the Islamabad Museum and the Natural History Museum.

The master plan of this most modern city was prepared in 1960 by M/S Constantions doxiades, a Greek firm of Architects. Construction was started in October 1961. The city came into life on 26 October 1966, when the first office building of Islamabad was occupied. It is modern and carefully planned city.

There are ample opportunities for walking, jogging, hiking and trekking around Islamabad in the Margalla Hills.

Pakistan
Gilgit
Gilgit is the most important city in the North of Pakistan. Althought the town itself is not evry big, nor extremely exciting, it is the best place to start exploring the region which has some of the best mountain scenery in the world. The town has two or three interesting sights. Two miles out of town there are a pair of Buddha's carved in to a high rock. They go back to the 5-th century. It's a nice hike, the scenery on your way is gorgeous. Then there is a monument to commemorate the fact that the boyscouts of Gilgit were the spark that set the flame in the battle between Pakistan and India for supremacy over Kashmir.

The post-office can hardly be considered a sight. But when you are traveling on to Skardu, Swat or Hunza valley, keep in mind that it is easier to send a few postcards to relatives from here than form any of the other valleys.

For the sportive, one of the most interesting excustions is to Rakaposhi base camp. Rakaposhi is a 8-km giant.

Chitral - Gilgit, Pakistan
Karachi
Karachi is the capital of the Sindh Province and is the largest city in Pakistan. It is the number one business city in Pakistan as well. Although for touristic reasons it is not the most interesting place in Pakistan, the fast paced life Pakistani style of this mega-city will have a big impact on you. There is a lot to do and see in the field of shopping, nightlife and eating out, more than anywhere else in Pakistan. With its wide sunny beaches, deep-sea fishing, yachting, golf and horse racing all-year round you do not have to be bored here. As Karachi faces the Arabian sea, it is also a major port, which along with its international Airport act as a hub for international trade, transport, manufacturing and commerce. Karachi is the center of commerce and although Islamabad is the new capital of Pakistan, Karachi was the previous one (until 1963) and all major banks have their headquarters in Karachi which even has its own stock exchange the KSI (Karachi Stock Exchange).

Karachi Harbour, due to its geographical and strategic location was known as gateway to Asia. Considered as a safe Harbour since time immemorial. An Ancient settlement, Karachi was a small fishing village in early Nineteenth Century. Historians identify it with its proximity to a place from where a part of Alexander's Army, boarded the Greek Flotilla in 326 B.C.

Near Karachi are many old cities with more hsitoric sights that can be visited as daytrips.

Lahore
If you have not seen Lahore, you have not born yet. ( A famous Punjabi proverb). This busy metropolis has some of Pakistan's best sites. Lahore has been the capital of the Moghul Empire and of that of the Sikhs. Lahore is located near the only border crossing with India that is currently open, in the Pakistani part of the Punjab. While you will see many Sikhs on the Indian side of the border, here the people are almost all Muslim.

On the Beach of the Arabian Sea Karachi, Pakistan
Many sights in Lahore go back to the times of the Moghul Emperors. Lahore has its own red Fort, one of the biggest Mosques in the subcontinent and some beautiful gardens.

Lahore is a fun city to walk through. Be sure to visit some of the small markets and shops (the Anarkali bazaar will keep you busy) and spend time at the British-built Mall, and a relatively new and modern shopping area (Gulberg). If you're in Lahore in late February or early March try to see the National Horse and Cattle Show Pakistan's version of a rodeo featuring equestrian competitions camel and tent-pegging displays dancers from the provinces and music concerts.

Lahore is located centrally in Pakistan and is an important travel hub. From Lahore you can go to Rawalpindi in the north, Peshawar near the Afghan border, or south to Karachi or Quetta.

Culture

The pleasures of Pakistan are ancient: Buddhist monuments, Hindu temples, Islamic palaces, tombs, pleasure grounds and Anglo-Mogul mansions - some in a state of dereliction which makes their former grandeur more emphatic. Scuplture is dominated by Graeco-Buddhist friezes, and crafts by ceramics, jewellery, silk goods and engraved woodwork and metalwork.

Town Hall, Lahore Metropolitan Corporation, Lahore, Pakistan
Pakistan's flotillas of mirror-buffed and chrome-sequinned vintage Bedford buses and trucks are dazzling works of art. Traditional dances are lusty and vigorous; music is either classical, folk or devotional; and the most patronised literature is a mix of the scholastic and poetic. Cricket is Pakistan's greatest sports obsession and national players are afforded hero status - unless, of course, they proselytise young and wealthy English women, then marry them.

Nearly all Pakistanis are Muslim, and Islam is the state religion. Christians are the largest minority, followed by Hindus and Parsees, descendants of Persian Zoroastrians. Note that dress codes are strictly enforced: to avoid offence invest in a shalwar qamiz - a long, loose, non-revealing garment worn by both men and women.

Pakistani food is similar to that of northern India, with a dollop of Middle Eastern influence thrown in for good measure. This means menus peppered with baked and deep-fried breads (roti, chapattis, puri, halwa and nan), meat curries, lentil mush (dhal), spicy spinach, cabbage, peas and rice, and of course that staple of hippies, the sturdy Hunza pie. Street snacks - samosas and tikkas (spiced and barbecued beef, mutton or chicken) - are delicious, while a range of desserts will satisfy any sweet tooth. The most common sweet is barfi (it pays to overlook the name), which is made of dried milk solids and comes in a variety of flavours. Though Pakistan is officially "dry", it does brew its own beer and spirits which can be bought (as well as imported alcohol) from specially designated bars and top-end hotels.
