Mayotte sits at the northern end of the Mozambique canal, at longitude 45? 20 East and between 12? and 13? latitude South. Halfway between Madagascar and the coast of Africa, it is some 1500 km from La Reunion and 10,000 kilometres from Paris.

Mayotte, with a land surface of 376 km2, consists of two principal islands, Petite Terre and Grande Terre, and some twenty islets dispersed over one of the most beautiful closed lagoons in the world. The capital is Dzaoudzi on Petite Terre.

The landscape is characterised by its gentle rise and fall. The highest peak, Mount Benara, rises to 653 meters. Early volcanic activity has left a crater that is today Lake Dziani on Petite Terre. Mayotte, protected from the eastern trade winds by Madagascar, enjoys a tropical maritime climate with only two seasons :

A dry, temperate season from May to October, And a hot, rainy season from November to April, watered by the monsoon from the north-west. Average temperatures are 27? from December to March and 24? from May to September. Rainfall varies from 1000mm a year in the south to 2000 mm in the centre of the island.

Culture

Mayotte has inherited a very diversified culture, a richly-textured fabric of African, Persian, Oriental, Malagasy, European and Arab origins. Over the centuries, an indigenous form of Islam has grown up on the island.

Passed down from the early Arab arrivals, the religion is today omnipresent in daily life. Between tradition and modernity, the society of Mayotte maintains the customary rules under the guidance of cadis, judges with the role of civil servants.

Muslim women play an important role in life on Mayotte. Owners of land and houses, responsible for household management, influential in local politics, women are the stabilisers of the island's economic life. Based on oral tradition, the heritage of Mayotte is not displayed visibly. The history, tales, beliefs and know-how of Mayotte culture are transmitted by the fundis, teachers who possess and pass on knowledge. Thus, fishing, animal husbandry and crop-growing make use of techniques and know-how transmitted from generation to generation. As for the harvesting of the ylang, Mayotte has maintained the centuries-old methods and rhythms that are its pride and essential elements of its cultural identity.
