Algeria is bordered with: Morocco, Mali, Niger, Libya, Tunisia.
The name Algeria derives from the Arabic Jaza'ir which is the plural for the word meaning "island" or "peninsula". The name Jaza'ir comes from the ancient regional descriptive, Barr al Jaza'ir (Lands of the Islands), indicating the three countries of the Magreb region.
The total area of Algeria is 2,381,741sq km, sharing its western border with Morocco, its southern border with Niger, Mali and Mauritania and its eastern border with Libya and Tunisia. Its 1,200km of northern coastline runs along the Mediterranean Sea.

Places of Interest:
Oran
Oran is the most important city of the west of Algeria. Oran's major claim to fame is the fact that it is the home of Rai music. Almost all great singers (Khaled, Cheb Mami, Faudel) are from Oran. The town was founded by Andalusian seamen in AD937 and flourished under Zianid rule, developing strong trading ties with Spain, which eventually led to Spanish occupation from 1509 to 1708 when Oran was captured by Ottoman forces. The Spanish recaptured the city two years later but withdrew after an earthquake destroyed most of the city in 1790.

Algiers
Algiers is quite an attractive city - but also one that is pretty dangerous. The old town, known as the Casbah, is a maze of small alleys and whitewashed houses, unfortunately it's also one of the least safe areas for tourists to come. There are quite a few nice boulevards dating back from the days of the French, who come in Algiers in 1830 and stayed for 130 years.

Daytrips from Algiers include Chrea (where you might be able to ski), Chiffa Gorge the towns of Tipasa, Djemila and Timgad and the ruins at Tenes and Cherchell.
Tamanrasset
Tamanrasset is one of the best places to go in Algeria. It is located in the deep south of the country. It offers some of the best desert scenery in the world as well as ancient rock carvings. The atmosphere is really great too. It has a sort of end of the world feeling.
